Nurse Manager:

Experience is preferred.  Certification is desired but not required.

Cardiology Nurse

Description and Responsibilities:

Nurses involved in the discipline of Cardiology assist with the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of cardiovascular diseases, as well as manage their patients' potential discomfort and the owners' emotional needs.  This balance can be a delicate one.  Necessary tasks encompass a wide range of knowledge and skills.

 

At AETC, a Cardiology Nurse is responsible for anticipating and meeting the needs of the Cardiologist.  Sophisticated testing and equipment often aid in the diagnostic process, and it is the responsibility of the nurse to set up and assist with a variety of procedures (see 'common procedures' list).  A Cardiology Nurse must be familiar with a wide range of laboratory tests, and will be required to properly obtain, store and process lab samples.  Some procedures require sedation or general anesthesia, and a Cardiology Nurse may be asked to monitor very high risk anesthetic patients.

 

A Cardiology Nurse is a primary contact to the clients beginning with the initial triage/exam. This nurse prepares and presents estimates for procedures to be performed, updates owners regarding patient status, and presents patient discharge information.  The Cardiology Nurse assists with medical record keeping, prepares invoices, manages laboratory results, and aids in patient scheduling. This nurse often acts as a liaison between the doctor and client and will assist with patient follow-up, client communication, and managing long-term care for a variety of chronic and complex diseases.

 

Common procedures:

  • Echocardiogram
  • ECG
  • Pacemaker placement
  • Holter monitoring

Required basic veterinary technician skills:

  • Proper animal restraint
  • Peripheral catheter placement and properly securing them
  • Venipuncture
  • Knowledge of various routes of drug administration
  • Calculation and administration of fluids and medications
  • Aseptic surgical area preparation
  • Monitoring and recording vital signs (TPR, SpO2, BP)
  • Basic in-house laboratory testing (CBC/Chem, Lytes, IStat, UA)
  • Maintain proper medical records

In addition to required basic technician skills:

  • Implement anesthetic plans from preanesthesia until recovery, monitoring throughout
  • Properly collect, handle and store lab samples. Knowledge of appropriate fasting, proper dosing, and correct timing, as well as proper submission of samples to outside laboratories.
  • Ability to perform microscopy for basic cytology and correctly identify basic cell differentials and cytological indications for malignancy
  • Ability to perform all in-house laboratory testing (CBC, Chem, Lytes, IStat, UA, coag (PT/PTT, platelet count), manual blood differentials)
  • Proper set up, care and cleaning of all equipment.
  • Ability to perform proper CPR.
  • Ability to set up, obtain and evaluate normal/abnormal ECG readings, indirect arterial blood pressure measurements, patient ventilation, oxygenation, and acid/base status.
  • Proper patient record-keeping using accepted medical terminology.
  • Ability to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented. Prioritizing the workload is a necessity.
  • Good interpersonal skills in relating to co-workers and clients. Acts in a professional manner.
  • Highly motivated, takes initiative.
  • Ability to handle stressful and sensitive situations.

CVT and/or Veterinary Technician Responsibilities and Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • triage incoming patients
  • manage clients and patients
  • execute treatment plans
  • assist DVM in assessment, diagnostics and treatment of patients
  • provide nursing care
  • obtain and process lab-work
  • use digital x-ray equipment
  • assist DVM with ultrasound procedures
  • monitor anesthesia and assist DVM in surgery

Client Care Representative Responsibilities and Requirements
